Many guitar methods avoid starting with a 3-finger chord by having you play partial chords, using only 3 or 4 strings, avoiding the lower strings entirely.

Here is guitar publisher legend Mel Bay's answer: the 1-finger G chord.

This is logical, and reduces your starting skill level to a much simpler chord. Trouble is, when beginners or children try to play the chords and avoid several strings, they can't. The sound is very unmusical and doesn't sound like real campfire guitar should. The bass strings are the ones that make the guitar really resonate. It's that booming, full-chord sound that really provides the pleasure and keeps us going. These methods have no ringing bass strings at all. Not much sound, not much fun either.
